Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurological movement disorder that affects an estimated 1 million people in the U.S. and more than 10 million people worldwide (source: APDA).

Symptoms: Most people thing of tremors or shaking when they think of Parkinson's Disease. However, PD causes other motor symptoms such as rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement, stooped posture, and shuffling gait. There are also non-motor symptoms of PD that include sleep problems, constipation, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.
Treatment: While there is no cure for PD, Medication and lifestyle changes can help control symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Physical therapy for Parkinson's Disease can be a critical part of your treatment plan to help address mobility challenges and teach you strategies to manage gait, balance, and postural changes.

APDA Virginia Chapter has information on local support groups and community events to get connected with the PD community.
Up ENDing Parkinson's Rock Climbing for people with Parkinson's and their friends/family monthly meetups at Latitude Climbing + Fitness. A fun way to get some exercise and engage with others living with PD.
The Empowerment Neurofitness & Wellness Center in Virginia Beach is the only gym in the area that is dedicated to offering fitness classes including PWR Moves, Rock Steady Boxing, and Tai Chi exclusively for people with neurological disorders.
Davis Phinney Foundation has a wealth of information and resources for all things Parkinson's Disease. You can order a free copy of their "Every Victory Counts" manual on the website - it's a comprehensive guide to proactive self care and holistic approaches to managing PD such as exercise, nutrition, emotional help, and more.
